Almond

Prunus dulcis

The almond tree is a member of the rose family, it is probably the oldest cultivated fruit of the old world, with their cultivation thought to go back to the bronze age. It originated in Asia and around 3000 years ago made its way via Persia to Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt before eventually arriving in the 5th century in the Mediterranean.

It is seen as a symbol of vigilance and rebirth because it blossoms so early in January. It was used widely in Persian medicine due to its variety of phenolic compounds and phytosterols, giving it antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, sedative, liver protective and prebiotic properties. It has been used for centuries to treat dry skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.
