Grain Alcohol

Grain Alcohol is used in the making of our Medical Herbalist crafted Turmeric and Thyme tinctures. Herbal Medicine tinctures use alcohol as a ‘medium’ to extract the non-oil soluble phytochemicals, carrying and preserving the unique qualities to produce potent herbal medicine. The alcohol used is not chemically produced, but obtained through the fermentation and steam distillation of wheat, it is gluten-free and importantly organic.

Organic cereal farming uses crop rotation, mulching and under-sowing of cover crops like red clover and ryegrass that act as living mulches to nurture soil health and manage weed populations. Organic strategies strive for balance — keeping enough weeds to provide habitats that promote biodiversity whilst limiting the compromise of crop yield and quality.

The two alcohol extraction tinctures used in Lusan are produced for us by a UK Herbalist working on the farm where the plants are grown. When used topically the alcohol enhances the penetration of the plant compounds thereby promoting the beneficial qualities and properties for our skin.

Laboratory synthesised alcohol often used in skincare products, can be drying or cause irritation, particularly when used in higher concentrations. Naturally fermented organic grain alcohol does not present the same problems, particularly when only used in very small quantities as in Lusan preparations.
