Melissa

Melissa officinallis

Melissa also known as Lemon Balm grows abundantly throughout northern Europe and is a mainstay in many kitchen gardens, often brewed to make herbal tea, that provides a sedative effect, easing insomnia and anxiety.

This nutrient-rich green leaf has been used since ancient times because of its sedative, spasmolytic and antiviral effects. In fact today it is renowned for not only these benefits but also its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Combined with its ability to balance sebum production, it is a fantastic ally for acne.

However, its gentle nature means it is also ideal for dry, sensitive, irritated or mature skin and provides soothing and anti-inflammatory relief to skin affected by eczema, psoriasis and shingles. It is specific to mending and soothing inflamed and problematic skin.

It contains high amounts of powerful antioxidants that work swiftly to reduce free radical damage, offering a certain amount of protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays and supporting and strengthening the skin through the passage of time.

Melissa has an immune and lymph system affinity. Due to its rosmarinic acid content it has a regulatory effect, providing positive support in the reduction of lymphedema.

Melissa has a delightful lemony scent, it is both calming and uplifting and can be very supportive in times of stress.

Our Melissa is biodynamically grown in the UK. I also use both Melissa Hydrosol and the essential oil in Lusan preparations, both are produced by traditional steam distillation and certified organic.
