Sesame

Sesamum indium

Sesame is native to tropical and subtropical regions needing much warmth and moisture to grow. Approximately six weeks after growing the plant flowers produce either white, yellow, pink or violet flowers.

Sesame is the oldest reported oil plant and was spread through human intervention from West Africa to North Africa and eastwards to India and China. It has been cultivated in India for over 5000 years. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that sesame strengthens the life energy Qi. It was prized in many ancient cultures not just as food source but as medicine in Ayurveda and Ancient Egyptian culture.

Up to 60% of the seed is oil with around 42% of the essential fatty acid oleic acid and 44% linoleic acid. Linoleic acid is crucial for maintaining barrier function in the skin. Oleic acid makes up 30æ of our skin's fatty acids, it forms part of the protective film on the surface of our skin and provides anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties to maintain overall skin health

This oil is readily absorbed carrying healing properties to the capillaries in the much deeper skin layers. An antioxidant-rich oil particularly rich in vitamin E, phenols, and its own unique antioxidant compounds including seaminol, it has great ability to reduce oxidative damage and support healthful ageing.

Other important compounds present include folic acid, B-complex vitamins (especially niacin), magnesium, calcium and phosphorus. Sesame oil has been preliminary assigned an SPF of 15, but further testing has yet to be done.

Our Sesame seed oil is certified organic, cold pressed to preserve its valuable fatty acids and antioxidants and comes to us from Mexico. It makes a wonderful herbal oil infusion with the ability to transport the valuable herbal properties to the lower layers of the skin.
