Myrrh

Commiphora myrrha

Is the gum resin of a shrub or small tree native to Ethiopia, Arabia and Somalia. It has small yellowish-orange leaves that appear at the end of the rainy season, red berries that ripen from the flowers and spiny thorns on its branches.

Ducts in the bark exude sap spontaneously or when the bark is wounded. This sap dries on the bark to a greyish or yellowish-brown resin – myrrh. It is aromatic and has a sharp to very bitter taste. Trees such as myrrh produce disinfectant resin to protect themselves against invading pests and to close wounds. Myrrh is one of the oldest known plants to be used for medicinal and ritual purposes.

It has antiseptic, antimicrobial, vulnerary, astringent and anti-fungal properties, which make myrrh the perfect natural remedy for preventing and treating wounds from infections, as well as fighting off harmful bacteria. When applied topically, its potent antioxidants help to reduce puffy or swollen skin while alleviating discomfort. A powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, myrrh tones the skin, helps reduce the appearance of scars and offers relief for skin inflammations such as acne and eczema.
